Legacy

A girl was born to a family blessed with land in a quiet village. Spirituality ran deep in the veins of this family, with a devotion to God that was unmatched. The baby girl was unlike her mother, who had piercing blue eyes and a gentle disposition. She was born with a demanding cry and a fiery, opinionated and unrelenting character. The girl was named "Jarnail", as in commanding army general. Jarnail was a force to be reckoned with. She had a razor sharp photographic memory; when she told a story she recited the tiniest details as if she were in a trance of remembrance. Jarnail had an aura of light around her and deep set eyes that seemed all-knowing. She was raised to live a fulfilling, God serving life.

Jarnail bore several children, six who survived infancy. A daughter was born to Jarnail who had an uncanny resemblance of spirit to her mother. She was a warrior, born to defy the bounds of an ordinary life. Jarnail raised her children with the wits of survival. She had a soft spot for her warrior child, Joginder, who never followed anyone else's path. Joginder was like a gypsy child who's curiosity about the world was insatiable. Jarnail knew her daughter would be a trailblazer, she had a fire in the pit of her belly that burned bright with the desire to live fully. Jarnail found herself raising her children alone, cursed with widowhood at an unjust age. When most village women would have wailed about their woes for the rest of eternity, Jarnail stepped deeper into her faith and stood strong. She sacrificed every waking moment to ensure her children grew up with the values their father embodied. Joginder grew into a beautiful and restless young woman, yearning for the adventures of life. Jarnail realized she had to let her favorite child go on to unknown places, further than anyone else in their family had ever traveled. Jarnail did everything in her power to make her daughter's dreams come true. She walked for miles and miles to complete the documentation required to give her daughter her wings to fly.

The day came when Jarnail had to say goodbye to her daughter. It was her greatest test of faith. No one could ever prepare this mother for separation from her children. However Jarnail was not afraid, for Joginder's willfulness was enough to convince her that her daughter would never settle until she was successful. In the final moments before Joginder set off on her long journey to a far off land, Jarnail called on God to protect her child and always give her the strength to overcome the challenges she was bound to face. God listened to Jarnail's pleading heart, for her soul was pure. God could not promise Jarnail that Joginder's life would be easy, in fact it would be wrought with difficult times, but God blessed her with the resiliency to overcome. God foresaw Joginder's future and granted her love and support and everything she needed to overcome. The first night of Joginder's departure, Jarnail drifted into a dreamland. Jarnail saw her daughter's face, brimming with excitement. She saw a place so completely different than her home and witnessed her daughter thriving in it.

In this dreamland God whispered reassurances to Jarnail that became her mantra: Your warrior child will find fulfillment in her adventures. She will be like no other. She will carry the blessings of her mother and God for all of her days. She will become your legacy.
